It goes without saying, that finding the right wedding venue for your special day is super important.
As Bessie Hays Bridal Boutique is based in Chester Le Street, in the north east of england, we are very lucky to be invited to many wedding fairs at some amazing venues throughout our region.
Due to this, I thought I would bring to together several hotels that I have visited as a guest or an exhibitor, to give you a starting list of wedding venues to research. I wish I had such a list when I was getting married!
Let’s get right into it!
Wedding Venues in Durham
Thought I would start with my home county of Durham. Durham is such a beautiful place to get married. It has many beautiful hotels to choose from, but I have picked out some of my personal favourites.

Lumley Castle, Chester Le Street – www.lumleycastle.com
Now, I might be a bit bias here (we are in Chester Le Street), but what a venue Lumley Castle is. It is over 600 years old and maintains all of that historical charm and glamour.
The hotel itself is a stunning piece of medieval architecture that can be seen from miles around. It really is the perfect place to get married.
I have visited Lumley Castle many times as a guest and I can say it oozes of luxury and Grandage. The rooms, as you would expect, are plentiful and their is a variety of spaces accommodating from 6 to 132 guests, so it will suit wedding parties of all sizes.
The food is superb – we have never had a meal that I have not loved and have gone back time and time again. Highly recommend it.
It is not many days you can say you have slept in a castle! (Unless you are the Queen, of course) This does not disappoint, which a selection of rooms in keeping with the luxury of the hotel.
You will be hard pushed to find many nicer venues than Lumley Castle.

Durham Royal County Hotel, Durham City – https://www.memoriesmademarriott.co.uk/durham/weddings
A special place in my heart, this one. This is the hotel where my husband and I had our wedding reception and evening do. We feel in love with this house due to its location and beautiful interior. A landmark inside in the city, the location is ideal for a wedding and for your guests.
As you enter the hotel, you find although the building is quite old and very beautiful, the inside has a modern feel to it. Something we loved. It has a beautiful staircase, which was fantastic for photos, leading to the accommodation. We have only ever stayed in the honeymoon suite, which was spacious, luxurious and comfortable.
Will always hold a special place in our hearts and we return every special wedding anniversary to relive our happy day.
Ramside Hall, Durham – https://www.ramsidehallhotel.co.uk/
In Durham, it doesn’t get any bigger and some might say, better, than Ramside Hall. I have been visiting the venue for years and we love going back.
We have had the privilege of been guests a few weddings over the years and they have been beautiful days. The hotel. As you can see, is very spacious and can accommodate a large number of people. We recently stayed in one of the newly refurbished rooms and it was stunning. Very luxurious and comfortable, we felt it was a real treat.
The food and service were exceptional. I know the Brides and Grooms we extremely happy with the day, Ramisde Hall lay on for them. Many happy memories were made.
Then there is the pièce de résistance – the attached Ramside Spa. Available to all guests staying at the hotel for free, it is truly amazing. You will love it, trust me.
Hardwick Hall Hotel, Sedgefield, Co Durham
Aren’t we looking lucky living in the northeast, especially Durham? Another superb hotel, this time in the lovely little town of Sedgefield – Hardwick Hall Hotel.
Hardwick Hall is set in the idyllic Hardwick Park, which is superb to catch those all-important wedding photographs. As you can see by the images above, it is stunning.
The hotel itself has 51 bedrooms, so it can accommodate a large wedding party and guests making it the perfect venue in a country setting. The accommodation is comfortable and very luxurious. We loved our room when we stayed here. Again, I have visited as a guest and exhibitor and I can only say the staff with lovely and the level of service was brilliant.
In the warmer months, Hardwick Hall offers some fantastic services for outdoor wedding settings and it looks amazing if you are looking for something a little different.
All in all, great setting in a beautiful part of the northeast of England.
Seaham Hall, Seaham, County Durham – https://www.seaham-hall.co.uk/
Seaham Hall introduces their website with – “Nestled in a striking cliff top location on the Durham Coast…..” . Seaham Hall truly is the lap of luxury. 5 star all the way, Seaham Hall has been decorated and appointed to the highest of standards.
I have loved every single visit to Seaham Hall and it is a venue close to me. My grandfather used to work here when it was a hospital. If only he could see it now!
We were wedding guests at the Hall and the experience was unforgettable. The venue was amazing, the food was to die for and the service was second to none. We had a beautiful day and the Bride and Groom waxed lyrical about the service they received from the hotel.
The accommodation was beautiful. Top of the range of decor and furnishing is what is awaiting you in your hotel room, should you choose to stay at the hotel. I have not stayed in many nicer hotels in my life.
The breakfast was lovely and generous. After breakfast, we visited the Spa. Wow! Just visit Seaham Hall spa. You will not be disappointed.
If you are looking for 5 star luxury in the northeast, look no further than Seaham Hall.
South Causey Inn, Stanley, Co Durham – https://www.southcausey.co.uk/
We absolutely love the South Causey Inn. I have visited here many times and spent a lot of time in the wedding venues when exhibiting. What a lovely, quirky place South Causey is.
From the outside, it just looks like a normal, country pub. Upon entering the inn, you would be delighted with its character and decor. The owners of the Inn have done a superb job making your visit to South Causey memorable.
The main wedding venues are beautiful inside South Causey. They are also very large. I think the room I was in last can hold up to 200 guests! So if you are having a big event, this is the place for you! Don’t worry it has a very large car park too.
The breathtaking backdrop of the beamish valley is the perfect place for you to take your wedding photos. You will cherish them forever.
Food is superb, it really is. We have never had a bad meal here and I would recommend it, anyone.
Accommodation – I kind of want to keep this secret, but I can’t !. They are amazing. There have converted barns, in many different themes. Most have a hot tub and one of the rooms is an old 1960’s converted London bus. The owners have really been creative with the rooms and can only applaud what they done.
South Causey Inn is a marvellous place to get married. You will not be disappointed.
Wynard Hall, Wynard, County Durham – https://www.wynyardhall.co.uk/
Wynard Hall is 12th Century Hall, situated in the very upmarket village of Wynard. Surrounded by some of the most landscaped gardens you will find in the northeast, Wynard Hall is simply stunning.
Sitting in beautiful, rolling parkland, it is ideal for the idyllic photos you may want to capture as part of your day. Using the backdrop of the Hall itself, would also making amazing photographs.
We were lucky enough to attend a wedding at the Hall and it blew us away. The rooms are HUGE, but beautifully decorated at the same time. The food was exceptional and the service equally as good.
If you wish to indulge in an overnight stay, the rooms are exquisite! They also have a number of cottages, that can accommodate six guests available for hire. They look beautiful and have their own hot tubs.
